Reimagine the Familiar

Writer: Jennifer BaldwinJennifer Baldwin

When I was young, I would jump out of bed on many weekend mornings, springing into action bringing to life my reimagined vision for my bedroom. I would often daydream and sketch out my ideas days before, and on those mornings, I would move furniture and items around adjusting my vision until I had re-created a familiar space into something new. From imagination to execution, this type of work continues to infuse new energy into familiar spaces and routines generating joy and excitement in me and positively impacting how I show up in other areas of my life.

Many of us gain fulfillment through creation. Creating and building something from scratch or something else comes in many forms and functions, yet the essence of it is the same. We get to leverage our ability to see what is possible beyond the current state. We get to put our creativity into practice prototyping ideas and concepts till we see an interesting and attractive new perspective encouraging us to take action and bring our visions into reality.

Currently, we are doing a bit of a refresh in our garden. We are converting a firepit area into a rose garden and building an outdoor fireplace nestled alongside a big boulder. It’s incredible to look at a space you see every day with fresh eyes, imagine something new, sketch it out, determine the materials needed, and then build it. The opportunities are endless!

Open the possibilities to reinvigorating and bringing joy into your space, routine, or process. Find something in your life like a corner of your dwelling, a patch of your yard, or a morning or evening routine that you see as a fixed or static part of the landscape around you. Sit with it and imagine something different in its place. What would it look like to add something? To move something? To remove something? Or, any combination of those visions.

Let your mind be free to come up with the fun, seemingly impossible visions and play them out. Sketch them out or write them down until you have something that allows you to take action to change the space or reorder a routine. It might be something small or a total reconfiguration. Honor your agility and creativity to see something new and make it so. Step back and acknowledge what you notice. What does this reimagination offer you and those around you? Happy creating!!
