Forming Sticky Habits

What is it about routines, schedules, and practices that make us productive and successful? How do we set ourselves up to keep our best practices running smoothly and aligned with what is best for us?

This is the time of year when we clean the slate, start fresh, and turn the page to a new beginning. We can have incredible “start-up” energy that fuels many changes towards things we courageously want and need to do differently. With the best intentions, we can dive right into new routines and expectations, leveraging this newfound energy. However, we often peter out and find ourselves exhausted, disappointed, and deflated. Even some of the most disciplined people face these challenges.

What if we paused and slowed down our thoughts and actions before we started sprinting and asked ourselves a few clarifying questions? This could help us determine the next best steps to make our habits sticky. Whether you have already begun new routines and practices or are about to, pause and ensure your new routine or practice has a strong foundation by taking a few minutes to walk yourself through answering the following questions:

  • What is most important to me about this?

  • What is the specific timebound outcome I’m driving towards that brings me joy?

  • What is possible once I accomplish this outcome?

  • How will I respond to challenges along the way?

  • Who is critical to engage for support and what are each of their roles?

What have you learned from this exploration that you can leverage to adjust or build upon your new goals, routines, and practices? What are you willing to do to support your success? Go make your habits sticky! You’ve got this!
